What does your heart rate tell you?

Whether at rest or while exercising, your pulse can reveal your heart attack risk and your aerobic capacity.

A healthy heart does not beat with the rhythm of the heartbeat. As your activities throughout the day change, it speeds up and slows down to accommodate your changing oxygen needs. What is a “normal” heart rate varies from person to person. However, an abnormally high resting heart rate or a low maximum heart rate can mean an increased risk of heart attack and death.

One simple thing people can do is check their resting heart rate. It’s a fairly easy thing to do, and having this information can help us along the way. It’s a good idea to take your pulse once in a while to see how normal you are and to identify unusual changes in heart rate or regularity that may require medical attention.
